Student Success

LECS faculty believe that core knowledge and skills are best mastered when both individualized study and collaborative learning projects are used. While differences in achievement cannot be completely erased, one on one tutoring and specific learning objectives can greatly ameliorate these differences. The following strategies will be used to ensure academic success:

1) While all areas of study are important, LECS holds reading, writing and mathematics to be the most essential. Therefore, in conjunction with the parents, a student's schedule may be altered to allow for additional tutoring time or computer-aided work in these areas.

2) Instead of the traditional emphasis on textbooks, the school will focus on books, software, articles and other materials in order to meet content standards.

3) Report cards will contain content standards, and written comments which focus attention on the specific goals the student has accomplished and those the student needs to meet.

4) Teachers will design class materials around a variety of activities which facilitate students working independently and cooperatively toward specific learning objectives. The classes will be large enough so that a variety of work stations, computer stations and floor space is adequate for the different activities.

5) Block scheduling will facilitate the necessary time to correlate knowledge content with skills application.

6) Three school wide events, the oratorical festival, the science/technology fair and the theater/arts performances will allow reinforcement of classroom instruction and make available a public forum for celebrating student successes.

7) Each class room will have several computers with at least one linked to the internet. Daily homework will be posted on a school web site, along with the school calendar, and meeting dates/minutes for SAC and the Board of Directors.
